Nikki is a teacher and the founder of the company, Educating Now, an online website that allows teachers to stream best practice math methods that they can use in their classroom. She is passionate about improving math literacy for children and adults.
What’s your idea worth spreading?
There are some myths about math that need busting! Being numerate is too important in today’s society and is possible for all of us. We need to reinvent the way we think, talk about and teach mathematics so it is accessible for all people, especially children.
What is a significant accomplishment, and why is that important to you?
The success of my company, Educating Now, and its reach across North America was a big step out of my comfort zone. I am a teacher and that is what I love to do, and this company allows me to teach more teachers, which in turn is helping to improve math education for thousands of students.
What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about improving math literacy! So many people carry negative math baggage throughout their life and it negatively impacts their careers and their life paths, which is so avoidable. It ignites my passion when I see teachers, students, and parents learning math in a way that makes sense to them and to see their confidence, achievement and love for math grow.
What do you want people to take away from your TEDx talk?
As a society we need to stop perpetuating myths about math that continue to damage our children’s (and adults’) ability to be math literate and instead see math for what it is: a relevant subject that can be learned by all.
